Sarah Jessica Parker | Lydia – Beetlejuice
Prior to Sarah Jessica Parker starring in the Broadway musical Annie, she first made her debut in Broadway at the age of 11 with The Innocents, a revival of the 1976 version. She launched a career in film, which included appearances in The Family Stone, Did You Hear About the Morgan? and Hocus Pocus. Her most prolific career was as one of the stars in a TV romantic-comedy.
Parker reportedly turned down a dark role in the movie Beetlejuice. It made sense because all her previous characters were of the more funny, perky type, and Beetlejuice did not fit with the kind of movies she was on during this period. Other actresses were also considered, including Brooke Shields and Alyssa Milano. Winona Ryder eventually got the role. To a degree, portraying Lydia in the film helped launch Ryder’s typecast as a sci-fi actress.
